But they reflect a superstition that abusive words can have the effect of real violence (a theme in the satiric tradition; Elliott 1960). Despite their deadly image, however, the iambic performers also cast themselves as victims. The two poets’ ancient biographies tell us that the two men were responding to wrongs suffered. Archilochos, it is said, was punishing Lykambes for withdrawing an offer of his daughter’s hand in marriage.
More puzzles emerge when we consider two theoretical elements: the genre’s perceived social function, and the self-presentation of its author figure. 87). Yet much of satire’s subject matter is very conventional, echoing the moral themes and illustrations that street-philosophers of the Greco-Roman world used in their diatribes: the corrupting influence of wealth, the dangers of ambition, and the impact of parents’ behavior on children. In terms of political alignment, the genre alternates between an oppositional and a conservative, masculine stance; it condemns tyranny and social inequality, but also lashes out against foreign influences on Roman culture, class mobility, and sexual deviance.
